Terex Utilities Collaborates with LATI to 3D Print Face Mask Components for Pandemic Relief

Terex Utilities has answered the call from Lake Area Technical Institute (LATI) to produce 3D-printed components for face masks, leveraging its rapid prototyping capabilities to support healthcare workers amid crisis. The initiative, led by LATI’s Electronic Systems Technology and Robotics Department, transforms idle 3D printers into a vital resource for PPE production.

Production Details & Technical Specs

  • Component Focus:
    • Face mask adjustment strips (replacing elastic bands for customizable fit)
    • Material: FDA-compliant PLA plastic (biodegradable, hypoallergenic)

  • Manufacturing Capacity:
    • Terex’s in-house printers: 8 strips every 20 hours (24/7 operation)
    • LATI’s 30 idle printers repurposed: 360 strips daily at full scale

  • Origins of Expertise:
Terex typically uses 3D printing for utility equipment prototyping (e.g., excavator parts, aerial lift components).

Community Impact & Distribution

  • PPE Donations:
    • 800+ face masks and 1,000+ adjustment strips delivered to SD/MN healthcare facilities
    • Priority recipients: rural hospitals, urgent care centers, first responders

  • Collaborative Process:
    • LATI students designed mask templates remotely
    • Terex optimized prints for durability and comfort
    • Local businesses donated additional filament materials

Educational Partnership Context

Terex’s long-standing relationship with LATI includes:

  • Program Support:
    • Diesel technology, precision machining, and heavy equipment operation curricula
    • Annual service training hosted on campus

  • Workforce Development:
    • Scholarship programs and internships leading to full-time employment
    • Advisory committee participation in curriculum design
